acne no more

After suffering from severe acne for more than 13 years, trying almost every conventional acne drug and treatment, Mike Walden, a 33 year old writer from California, began an extensive 4-year research to find an alternative cure for acne and perhaps reveal the truth behind what he calls “the inflammatory disease of lies and misconceptions”.

“Acne sufferers are getting tired of being exploited”, Says Walden “There are too many marketers and charlatans out to make a fast buck on the expense of the vulnerable. Acne sufferers cannot afford to spend their hard earned money on useless pricey acne cures and quick fixes only to be disappointed time and time again.”

Through his research, Walden realized that there is an abundance of acne cures that focus merely on the symptoms of acne, but very few if any that focus on permanently fixing the root cause. Read the rest of this entry »

Ran across an article today about how Victoria Beckhamis using a special food from Japan to combat her acne that she has fought with for many years.

The wife of soccer star David Beckham, Victoria has been eating something called Natto, made from fermented soy beans, because its vitamin PPQ content helps fix scarred skin and also increases energy levels.

A source said:

“Victoria says natto tastes weird and smells a bit horrible but you only have to eat a small portion to get the benefits. She has just been having two small pots a day, sometimes with rice.”

“She has been able to relax her super-strict diet and eat and drink more of what she likes, such as green tea ice-cream and her all-time favourite, champagne! David is very happy about it and Victoria has already noticed a difference - even though she has only eaten it for a couple of weeks.”

Victoria is said to be “thrilled” after gaining 8lbs, especially as she and David are trying for another baby, and feels her self-esteem has improved greatly.

The source added:

“Victoria’s confidence is really growing. She is looking fantastic and so natural that she’s comfortable being seen out in the casual Los Angeles look nowadays.”

Even though she has gained a few pounds on her very slight frame, Victoria is happy with the new look and so apparently is David Beckham

Back-to-school can be a stressful time for teens, especially if they have an acne problem. This doesn’t just apply to girls - in the new Acne Report (a national survey of teens and moms conducted by Harris Interactive for the OXY® line of acne care products) 22 percent of teen boys reported that acne breakouts lower their self-confidence. What differs is the way they deal with it.

“While it may seem that teenage boys don’t care as much about how they look or what their skin is like, acne can actually have a lot of the same psychological and social effects on boys as it does on girls,” says dermatologist, David Bank, M.D., director of The Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic and Laser Surgery, in Mount Kisco, New York. “Talking about your teen daughter’s acne is very main-stream and young girls have tons of magazines and beauty Web sites offering tips and options. There are less of these resources for boys and, ultimately, it is just harder for boys to ask for help.”

Dr. Bank offers tips to help parents talk with their sons about how to help treat and prevent acne breakouts: Read the rest of this entry »

By its very nature, skin of color is considered sensitive skin by dermatologists who regularly treat darker-skinned patients for a wide range of skin problems. Acne and rosacea can be especially problematic skin conditions for people with skin of color, as any skin irritation in these patients can cause pigmentation problems that can result in the lightening or darkening of the skin.

At the American Academy of Dermatology’s Summer Academy Meeting 2008 in Chicago, dermatologist Valerie D. Callender, MD, FAAD, clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C., discussed the importance of early intervention in treating acne and rosacea in patients with skin of color.

“As we become a more diverse population with lots of different skin types and tones, we also are seeing an increase in skin concerns that, while not new, are affecting more and more people with darker skin,” said Dr. Callender. “Even skin conditions like acne and rosacea can create pigmentation problems in these patients, which can be very hard to treat. However, these problems can be improved by seeing a dermatologist who is trained to properly diagnose these conditions and to carefully consider a patient’s potential risk of skin irritation.” Read the rest of this entry »

“It’s well-known that people associate a healthy person with healthy skin,” says skin specialist and esthetician Emily Allen of Heaven Day Spa in San Francisco, California.

“There are the four different grades of acne,” Allen explains. “Understanding each is step one in creating a healthier complexion.”

Grade 1 Blackheads and open comedones.
“A comedone is like a blackhead with a hardened ball that looks like a yucky pearl which is comprised of bacteria and dead skin cells, and it accumulates in the follicle until it gets so big the follicle stretches open, commonly on your nose,” says Allen.

Grade 2 Blackheads and papules.
“Papules are raised red bumps, which are minor, and there’s no puss inside or a white head — a typical blemish,” says Allen.

Grade 3 Papules, open blackheads, and some pustules — typical teenage-type acne.
“It’s getting heavier at this grade, becoming chronic and can leave scarring. The face is red and inflamed.”

Grade 4 Cystic acne.
“This is a case where a dermatologist is needed,” says Allen.

“For all skin types, start with a foaming cleanser — nothing milky or creamy, and preferably one that is soap-free,” explains Allen. Next, Allen advises that you use a topical product with salicylic acid. Moisturizers, pore-openers, and blemish spot-treatments are all available at drugstores nationwide. “Salicylic acid is one of the most effective products for mild to moderate acne,” says Allen. “The key to acne is to keep the inflammation down, and salicylic acid not only acts as an exfoliant, it’s the only acid that’s an anti-inflammatory.”

“Finally, benzoyl peroxide is really great as a spot treatment,” says Allen. “Apply it right on the blemish. The reason that it’s so great is it puts oxygen in the skin, and it exposes that blemish-causing bacteria so it literally dies.”

Style Sessions Tip: Sulphur is a great drying agent, and also helps diminish redness that often remains when a blemish heals. “I like a good sulphur mask when I have a breakout,” says Allen. “Then I spot treat with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid at night.”

Q: My child has acne and the dermatologist we have been going to just keeps giving them antibiotics.

The problem got slightly better but now they want them to keep taking antibiotics long term.  I am concerned about this, and the long term effects of the drugs on my child.  Is there anything that acupuncture, Chinese medicine or other holistic therapies can do to heal this?

A:  Thank you for your question, and it is a common question indeed!

First of all, the presence of acne (usually in adolescence) is a manifestation of a systemic disorder from a Chinese medicine perspective.  Therefore, in order to attempt to cure the acne, one MUST address the reason the acne is there in the first place.  From a Western medicine perspective often the finger is pointed at “hormone imbalance” as the cause of acne.  However, if this were the case then all teenagers would have acne, which is not the case.  The question of “why are the hormones out of balance?” needs to be asked on an individual basis.  This will then assist in getting down to the bottom of the issue, and therefore the cause of acne.  When this is done in a thoughtful and educated manner, then their is hope for finding a cure for that acne sufferer.

From my Chinese medicine experience, usually the child’s diet is a major factor in contributing to the cause of acne.  In addition, the gut’s micro flora (healthy gut bacteria  such as L.Acidophillus, etc.) which is in part responsible for the proper breakdown of food, is often wiped out due to repeated courses of antibiotics.   This is true because as the antibiotics attack the infection causing bacteria, they ALSO DESTROY HEALTHY, IMMUNE ENHANCING , HEALTH PROMOTING BACTERIA that lives in your body.  Unfortunately, this will, in the long run hinder the person’s ability to assimilate food and nutrients, and will cause a weakening of the person overall.  Of course, this does not lend itself to a healing environment of the body-mind. clear-skin.jpgNo matter what the circumstance, the old saying is true, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Whether it’s a job interview or a first date, you always want to look your best. But according to researchers, acne affects 25 percent of adult men. Unfortunately for guys, if you get a pimple, your options are limited. After all, you can’t exactly cover it with makeup like the ladies would, but you have to get rid of it fast, so what do you do?

Of course, there are creams of all kinds that can treat blemishes for you, everything from simple over the counter fixes to the stuff you see on the TV infomercials. The problem for most guys is that they don’t want to mess around with something they have to apply every day, and they don’t want their skin to look dry and cracked either.

There is a high tech solution that makes this annoying problem go away. It’s a little gadget you can keep on your bathroom counter, or carry along with you in your gym bag or briefcase. Luiz Da Silva invented ThermaClear, a hand-held anti-acne device that many men say they can’t live without. It uses heat technology, similar to the laser treatments you’d receive in a dermatologist’s office, only on a much smaller scale, to fight mild-to-moderate acne. Read the rest of this entry »

Differin is becoming a common product to battle acne. It was only approved by the FDA in 2007 so the overall benefits of it are still not known. It is recommended as a good option for moderate to severe acne though. It is available by prescription and many medical professionals are finding it is getting their patients positive results.

How does Differin work?

Differin (or adapelene) is a gel that doesn’t have any odor to it. Many users like that because so many other acne medications have a strong scent to them. This product is able to penetrate deep down into the pores so it can help to stop acne outbreaks before they even start. Read the rest of this entry »
