Diet and lifestyle can play important roles in the management of recurring skin conditions including acne, according to the British Association of Dermatologists.
Celebrity-inspired weight-loss trends such as the high hypoglycemic index (GI) diet have been known to aggravate acne, with experts warning that vitamin supplements alone cannot clear up problem skin.
Nina Goad, a spokesperson for the BAD, said: “A balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and limited processed foods will help to support the body in general, including the skin.”
The hypoglycemic index is a scale that ranks carbohydrate-rich foods by how much they raise blood glucose levels compared to glucose or white bread. Low GI foods are usually lower in calories and fat, while also being high in fibre, nutrients and antioxidants.
Scientists have recently identified a new skin condition labeled ’smoker’s acne’ that predominantly affects adult female smokers.
A study found that 42 per cent of smokers suffered from acne compared to one in ten non-smoke
