Acne Herbal Remedies? Could they work?

Everyone is susceptible to developing acne, because of this the market for acne products is definitely huge. There will never be a lack in interested buyers who are willing to try on new products like creams, ointments, and lotions, among others.

For as long as this skin condition persists, users will regularly flock the dermatologists’ offices and the pharmaceutical outlets and try the proposed remedies on how to cure acne. If you have read this blog for any length of time then you know that I am not too much of a fan of how the dermatologists treat acne symptoms instead of being more holistic in their approach.

Herbal plants and flowers are effective alternatives on how to cure acne. Different varieties have been tried by many professional herb guys for years to come up with various mixes that are claimed to be efficient in keeping your skin blemish-free but the fact that what may cure one person of his or her acne may not have the same effect on others.

Other factors need to be considered such as the person’s skin type, and degree of acne infections. Fortunately, since there is little or no side effects attached with these herbal mixes, it is possible to try them all and stick to the one that works for you.

Herbal remedies are recommended since they can be powerful cleansers that could clear your body of unwanted and harmful toxins. The best mixture works best when taken orally (drank) so you could make them as tea, which you can sip during the day. In preparing for your herbal concoction, you need to get the following – burdock, echinacea, English walnut, fragrant valerian, blue flag, yellow dock and wild strawberries. These main ingredients can work alone or blended with one another. You can also perform your own combinations although be careful in doing so as you would not want to produce something that may be dangerous to drink. By following the specific instructions, you may find the right mix on how to cure acne.

The leaves of burdock herbs when boiled in water can be used to wash your face to clear away the acne. Moreover, when combined with echinacea, blue flag, with honey, it can be mixed as tea that you can drink three times daily. You should limit yourself to only three cups and do not expect immediate results. Herbal plants take some time before you can see the positive changes on your skin.

Another suggested mixture on how to cure acne is make a drink mixing burdock with dandelion and sarsaparilla. The amount of honey depends on your preference as this is used to add taste to the concoction. The English walnut, fragrant valerian, and wild strawberries are for external cleaning upholstered only to wash the affected portions of your face and not be taken internally. The roots and the leaves are boiled in water and the final product should be applied on your face in the same way as you put acne creams or lotions.

So are acne herbal remedies worth a shot? Yes, I beleive that herbs are a great thing to try to get rid of your acne and not only your acne but these herbs will also help to cleanse your body and your blood.

Mayo Clinic has a great article today summarizing all of the over the counter products that help heal ant treat acne. Here is the info.

Many acne products are available in pharmacies and drugstores. Find out how they differ, what main ingredients to look for and how to use these products for best results.

Many over-the-counter (OTC) acne products are available to treat mild to moderate acne or periodic breakouts. But with so many acne products lining store shelves, how do you know which one is best for you?

Before you grab whatever package is closest, learn how OTC acne products work and what ingredients to look for. Then, develop a gentle skin care regimen to treat and prevent acne breakouts.

How acne develops

Your hair follicles are connected to sebaceous glands, which secrete an oily substance known as sebum to lubricate your hair and skin. Sebum normally travels up the hair shafts and then out through the opening of the hair follicle onto the surface of your skin.

When your body produces an excess amount of sebum and dead skin cells, they can accumulate in the hair follicle and form a soft plug. As the plug enlarges, the follicle wall can rupture, allowing more oil and skin cells to accumulate. Bacteria can trigger inflammation and infection resulting in acne.

Some OTC acne products work by killing Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), the bacteria that cause acne inflammation. Other acne products remove excess oils from the skin or speed up the growth of new skin cells and the removal of dead skin cells. And in some cases, acne products work by doing a combination of these things.

Active ingredients in acne products

Acne products work in different ways, depending on their active ingredient. Here are common active ingredients found in acne products and how they work to treat acne.

Benzoyl peroxide. Probably the most effective active ingredient in acne products, benzoyl peroxide kills P. acnes, helps remove excess oils from the skin and removes dead skin cells that clog pores. Available in strengths from 2.5 percent to 10 percent, benzoyl peroxide can cause excessive dryness, scaling, redness and minor swelling. It can also make your skin more sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) exposure.

Salicylic acid. This ingredient slows shedding of cells inside the hair follicles, which prevents the pores from clogging. It may also break down whiteheads (clogged pores that have no opening) and blackheads (pores that are open and have a dark surface). Salicylic acid can cause mild stinging and skin irritation. OTC acne products are available with 0.5 percent to 2 percent salicylic acid.

Sulfur and resorcinol. Rarely used alone, sulfur and resorcinol are often found together in acne products. These ingredients remove dead skin cells that clog pores and help remove excess oil. They may also break down whiteheads and blackheads. Sulfur and resorcinol can cause redness and peeling, which may occur several days after using the product.

Alcohol and acetone. Often available in astringents and other cleansing washes, alcohol and acetone remove dirt and oils from the skin. Acne products that contain these ingredients can cause a mild burning or stinging sensation.

Using acne products for best results

To minimize redness, excessive dryness and other skin problems, start out with lower strength acne products. If needed, gradually increase the strength and frequency of your applications so that your skin can adjust to the treatments.

Acne products are just one step in your skin care regimen. For best control of acne:

Avoid oily cosmetics, sunscreens and hair products. Instead use products labeled “oil-free” or “noncomedogenic,” which means they won’t clog pores.

Wash problem areas twice daily with a nonmedicated soap or mild cleanser. But don’t overdo it. Excessive washing and scrubbing can worsen acne.

Apply just enough acne product to cover the problem areas.

Use an oil-free, water-based moisturizer to help alleviate dry, peeling skin.

Don’t pick or squeeze blemishes. Infection or scarring may result.

Treating acne with acne products takes time and patience. It may take four to six weeks of daily use of acne products to see results, and acne may look worse before it gets better. If your acne doesn’t improve after two months of treatment, you may want to see your doctor or dermatologist for a prescription lotion or medication.

Since the skin is the largest organ on the body and it assists other major organs in the human body with eliminating waste, one of the best acne treatments is diet which has many home remedies for acne in the foods that we eat. If you are unhealthy inside it will be reflected in your skin.

Acne occurs when the natural oils that the skin produces clogs the pores of the skin. Normally acne is prevalent in the onset of puberty when the body starts to produce hormones, it has also been known to be a problem for women during pregnancy. Since acne is a problem for people world wide, there are many forms of acne treatments, acne products and acne medications on the market.

A natural treatment for acne is diet, which some say can be an acne cure and for many is the best acne treatment. When I was a teenager I had severe acne and tried using what were considered the best acne treatments at the time.

Retin-A was one of the most popular prescription acne medications on the market at that time. Noxzema skin cream and Clearsil were two of the most popular acne products used among my friends and I. I learned the hard way that Alcohol should not be used as a home remedy for acne and with severe acne cutting back on processed foods replacing them with a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables. I thought that diet as a natural acne treatment was going to be bad because until that point I lived junk food.

Using diet as a natural acne treatment was not as bad as I had thought it would be. There are so many foods that act naturally as a home remedy for acne and are often the best acne treatments. At first I thought that it would be easier to just remember when to use acne medication or the other acne products that I was using at the time rather than to give up on junk foods.

The internal home remedy for acne prescribed by my doctor and mother turned out to be for me the best acne treatment used along with all natural acne products like tea-tree oil. To my surprise I enjoyed this change in diet and in a short time I felt like it was an acne cure that was noticeable with in the week.

My mother was happier that I was eating something besides chips and was also happy with what we thought was an acne cure. She was also happy that she did not have to spend a lot of money on acne medications or worry about which over the counter acne products were the best. Who would have thought when I drank naturally sweetened juices and lots of water that it would be a natural acne treatment. My breakouts were far and few in between all because of using diet as an acne treatment turned out to pretty much be an acne cure for me.

There are so many acne treatments on the market today that profess to be the answer to all of your problems but the truth of the matter is you will have to find the best acne products or try to find the best home remedies for you by simply researching on your own.

Some people will require acne medications because more serious illness are the reason for their acne problem. Home remedies for acne through diet can alleviate many of your outbreaks because we truly are what we eat. If the eyes are the window to the soul then the skin is a reflection of your overall health so the beginning of a real cure starts from within.

If you’re desperate to zap all the pimples from your face, you might find yourself turning to DIY remedies that either have no effect, make your acne worse, or cause permanent damage to your skin. If you truly want an effective acne regimen, you should avoid making the following mistakes:

* Expecting instant results: A pimple doesn’t sprout overnight any more than a baby suddenly pops into existence. An acne lesion takes time to form. Your pore begins giving birth to a pimple long before you notice it. That’s why you can’t expect instant results from acne products. And consider this: If something is strong enough to instantly wither your pimples, imagine what it’s doing to your skin! Your best bet is to focus on long-term remedies that will keep your skin clear.

* Depending on only one product: The formation of acne is a long and complicated process, and the triggers are unique to each individual. That’s why you’re not likely to find one single “magic fix” for your pimples. For example, spot treatment can be effective for existing acne lesions, but it doesn’t stop more pimples from forming. Washing your face with an appropriate cleanser every day can help, but you might also need to tweak your diet or drink more water. Acne isn’t a simple enemy, so you need different weapons in your arsenal.

* Over-washing your face: For the most part, you should wash your face no more than twice a day. And even then, you need to be gentle and use a mild cleanser that’s appropriate for your skin type. Scrubbing your face and using harsh cleansing agents will just irritate your skin and make your breakouts even worse.

* Jumping from remedy to remedy: Most acne products and regimens won’t give you overnight results. You can’t just switch to a new remedy every week or two; you must give them time to work. Your skin will also suffer from the stress of all these different chemicals you’re inflicting on it, so it never gets time to adjust. Flitting from one thing to another can set you up for worse skin problems.

* Ignoring the underlying causes of acne: Most acne sufferers just want the blemishes gone. Who cares how they form? But it’s important to understand exactly how acne forms and what your triggers are, because only then are you armed with the knowledge you need to choose a skin care regimen that works best for you.

* Stopping treatment when skin clears up: Once you find something that works for you, you need to keep using it. If you stop, the acne is only going to come back. Remember, there is no cure for acne. The best you can do is control it.

* Not using sunscreen: The sun can do a great deal of damage to your skin. More than that, many acne products make your skin even more susceptible to sun damage. You should always wear a non-comedogenic sunscreen, which will protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

* Avoiding moisturizer: You might be afraid that using a moisturizer will clog up your pores and make things even worse. However, when applied to clean skin, a noncomadogenic moisturizer will not cause more outbreaks. In fact, since many acne treatment products are drying, you need to follow up with moisturizer to keep your skin from getting dry and flaky.

Those are just some of the many mistakes people make when treating acne. Most of these problems can be avoided by being patient and as gentle with your skin as possible.

Many parents are horrified to find that a baby can be born with acne, or develop it in the first few weeks of life.

In fact, most babies have some kind of rash as newborns. This may be baby acne, seborrhea (also known as seborrheic dermatitis), or eczema. Of these three possible rashes, acne is generally regarded as the least serious because it is the quickest to clear up. It is believed to be caused by hormonal changes occurring at birth.

Acne occurs in about 20% of babies, more commonly in boys than girls. It manifests as a red lumpy rash over the forehead and cheeks, sometimes with whitehead pimples. It is thought to be caused by transfer of hormones from the mother to the baby during the birth.

It looks a lot like the pimples that teenagers get but of course a baby does not know or care how it looks and the pimples do not cause any discomfort so you do not have to worry about it having any effect on your baby. In fact, the only way a baby might be affected by it is if the unattractive look of the rash makes you as parents treat the baby differently or show him or her less affection than you would if he or she had perfect skin.

Acne in babies will disappear by itself within a few weeks of birth. Most cases do not require any treatment. Definitely do not use any acne products designed for teenagers, these are much too harsh for a baby’s skin and could cause scarring. Also do not use lotions or oils as these can increase the problem. Simply wash once a day with baby soap.

Seborrhea looks a lot like acne except that in addition to a red bumpy rash, the skin will often form yellow crusty scales or flakes in places that have hair follicles, e.g. the scalp, eyebrows and even eyelashes. This skin condition starts within the first few weeks of life and again will clear up by itself without treatment, although usually not as quickly as acne. There are steroid treatments available if the condition is serious.

Eczema is a well known skin condition that can affect babies, usually starting before they are 5 months old but sometimes appearing for the first time in older children. Eczema causes itching and discomfort to the baby so treatment is often required. It usually starts on the face or head but often appears on other parts of the body too, sometimes all over. It can be caused by milk allergies but that is not the only possible cause.

If you think that your baby may have eczema, it is a good idea to speak to your pediatrician about it quickly. You will need to use a moisturizing cream for management and there may be some measures you can take in regard to the baby’s food or environment.

Many babies and children grow out of their eczema as they get older but it does persist into adulthood in some cases, with more or less severity. However, if your infant has a simple case of baby acne, there is no need to worry.

There are two very popular anti acne products on the market that are topical lotions (put directly on your skin) to get rid of your acne. Proactiv and Clearasil. Proactiv has become very popular over the last few years while Clearasil has been around for many many years.

Proactiv Solution

Proactiv is the new kid on the block. You have probably seen the infomercials, ads and kiosks in the malls all touting the Proactiv system and the nice tanned picture of Vanessa Williams or Jessica Simpson. Proactiv is a three step system consisting of a cleanser, a toner, and a repairing lotion. The cleanser has a main ingredient of Benzoyl Peroxide, the toners main ingredients are Glycolic acid and glycerine and the repairing lotion also has a main ingredient of Benzoyl Peroxide.

The thing that I really like about the Proactiv system is the fact that it is a very integrated system and should treat your skin properly by having a system that looks after each of the aspects of skin care and using the proven power of Benzoyl Peroxide. The problems that I see with the Proactiv system is firstly the price, it is a very expensive system to buy and secondly this a product that is built on a marketing message and not just sound medical advice. Look critically at the products before you buy them.

Clearasil

Clearasil is a large family of products that are mostly based on using Triclosan and Salicylic Acid. The company sells everything from face washes and overnight gels to Cleansers and wipes. Triclosan is an antifungal agent and is used in many products not just for acne products. Salicylic Acid slows down the cells in the follicles from cracking which prevents blockage. It also assists in breaking down the whiteheads and blackheads.

Clearasil has a fantastic breadth of a product line, I am really in favor of an integrated skin regimen of a toner, cleaner and overnight cream and Clearasil offers them all. The price for Clearasil products is OK, they charge more than the product is worth but lets face it Clearasil have the market and a proven product. The one drawback is a little bit of product confusion, Clearasil tries to have every product possible and your really do not need more than three. If you buy the Clearasil products then make sure you think of when you will use each one every day and what it will cost you.

Interested in a proven method to rid you of your acne? Then visit the Acne no more site. Or another product is the herbal acne treatment called Acnezine.

I just ran across this list of active ingredients that are common to different acne treatments. Most of us are used to seeing Clearasil and Proactiv but to know what these products contain is at least as important as the ads that they have on TV

Used to treat mild, moderate and severe acne, the effectiveness of over-the-counter medications lies in the product-s active ingredients. The active ingredient benzoyl peroxide reduces acnes; whereas, salicylic acid helps correct abnormal skin shedding. To choose what to use look at what the ingredient is expected to fix. I have included common active ingredients used in over-the-counter acne medications sold in the United States. Check with your dermatologist or pharmacist before combining acne products.

Alcohol and acetone
Found together in some over-the-counter medications used to treat acne, acetone works as a degreasing agent and alcohol has mild antimicrobial properties. When used alone, acetone tends to have no effect.

Benzoyl peroxide
The mainstay of over-the-counter acne treatment, benzoyl peroxide works to clear up acne by reducing acne and removing dead cells from the skin to prevent comedones. Use of benzoyl peroxide should be continued after acne clears to prevent new lesions from forming. It was one of the first agents found to be effective in treating mild acne and has been used in acne treatment for decades. The principal side effect is excessive dryness of the skin, so be sure to follow directions and not use more than stated unless otherwise instructed by a physician. Care should also be taken when applying it to avoid the bleaching effect. Benzoyl peroxide has been known to bleach hair, sheets, towels and clothing. For this reason, an old shirt should be worn after applying benzoyl peroxide to acne on the back or chest. Benzoyl peroxide is available over-the-counter as a lotion or gel.

Herbal, organic and natural products
Over-the-counter products labeled -herbal,- “organic” or “natural” are marketed as acne treatments but their effectiveness has rarely been tested in clinical trials. The value of such treatments is generally unknown.

Resorcinol
A popular ingredient in over-the-counter acne medications, resorcinol controls small acne lesions and is frequently combined with sulfur in products at the drugstore.

Salicylic acid
Salicylic acid is effective in treating non-inflammatory acne lesions, salicylic acid helps correct the abnormal shedding of skin cells and unclog pores to resolve and prevent lesions. Salicylic acid does not have any effect on sebum production or P. acnes. Like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid must be used continuously. Once stopped, pores clog and acne returns. Salicylic acid is found in many over-the-counter acne products, including lotions, creams and pads. It may be irritating to the skin.

Sulfur
Sulfur has been used for more than 50 years in combination with other agents, such as alcohol, salicylic acid and resorcinol and is found in many over-the-counter acne medications. While long used to treat acne, it is not known how sulfur works to clear acne. Due to its unpleasant odor, sulfur is not frequently used alone as an acne treatment.
