Hormonal changes and acne
A hormonal change during adolescence is a very common issue and is one of the prime factors of acne formation. Androgen hormones are present in people of either sex; during adolescence is particular group of hormones become active and starts to stimulate the oil glands in your skin, thus increasing oil production. This in turn clogs the skin ducts and gives rise to pimples, acne and blackheads. Hormonal changes may also occur with the consumption of birth control pills, or in case of chain consumers if they stop the intake of those pills all of a sudden. Read the rest of this entry »

Image from Wikipedia Plagued by acne? Then you’ve probably wondered whether eating junk food gives you spots. Until now, the accepted thinking was that this was a myth, the sort of wishy-washy warning that a mother might resort to in an attempt to encourage her teenage children to eat more healthily. Before you grab a bag of crisps, however, it is worth noting the results of a study published recently in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Scientists now believe it is not a particular type of food – such as pizza, chips or chocolate – that is to blame for triggering acne, but rather the typical western diet as a whole.
This thinking is based on a study conducted by nutritionists at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia, who followed two groups of young males, aged 15-25, with acne. Half of them followed their regular diet, which included plenty of processed foods with a high glycemic index (GI) – the type of diet that is typical among westerners – while the rest were given a low-GI diet of whole grains, lean meat, fish and plenty of fruit and vegetables.
After 12 weeks, the low-GI group showed a measurable decrease in their acne, with 51% fewer pimples than when they embarked on the program. “That is a better result than you would see from using a topical acne solution,” says Professor Neil Mann, who led the study. A high-GI diet raises levels of insulin and an insulin-like growth factor, IGF-1, which increases production of the male hormone testosterone. This, in turn, triggers the overproduction of sebum, the greasy substance that blocks pores and causes spots. “A diet rich in processed foods pushes glucose and insulin levels higher, exacerbating this problem,” Mann says. The trial was small, and more thorough investigation is necessary; however, it is the latest to provide evidence that diet is influential in causing acne. Read the rest of this entry »

There is a persistent rumor that sugar and chocolate cause acne and acne flareups. This may be true occasionally but mostly it is just that, a myth. There are many researchers that are looking at the link between chocolate and sugar and acne.
Maybe it is becasue it tastes so good, bnut chocolate and sugar are always blamed for acne and have been for years. Other foods that are blamed include allmost every junk food as well as alcohol and smoking. No foods have been proven to cause acne. But as we have seen many people have a really good diet and still get acne, doesn’t seem fair does it?
Overactive oil glands, non clean oily skin, heredity, and hormonal changes are what cause acne. Androgen production is at its highest during the teenage years, which stimulates sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum. Outbreaks of pimples and blackheads can become a traumatic event for young boys and girls.
If however, upon eating something there is an outbreak of zits the next day, it is advisable to stay away from that food for a while. Much research suggests that foods do not cause acne, but it has not been proven as fact. If on eating the same food again after a few days the result is an outbreak, the chances are it is an allergic reaction rather than an outbreak of acne.
In recent studies, scientists have demonstrated the possibility of regulating hormones as a significant reduction element of acne, although this could have negative side effects.
Teenagers are not the only ones with acne. Women who are pregnant or in their 40s can have outbreaks, but by the time a person is 50 it usually has run its course. During the teenage years, boys are more susceptible to stronger breakouts than girls, but when they reach around 40, the women take the lead in numbers of flare-ups.
Chocolate has been blamed for many ailments including acne, tooth decay, obesity, and lacking of food value. It has also been known to have an anti-depressant effect, cause hypertension and even have an aphrodisiac effect.
We know that sugar is basically harmless with your acne problems unless, like everything else, it is over-consumed. Chocolate and sugar has been found not to cause nor aggravate outbreaks of acne. These results are backed up by further research that shows acne in no way is affected by chocolate.

Since the skin is the largest organ on the body and it assists other major organs in the human body with eliminating waste, one of the best acne treatments is diet which has many home remedies for acne in the foods that we eat. If you are unhealthy inside it will be reflected in your skin.
Acne occurs when the natural oils that the skin produces clogs the pores of the skin. Normally acne is prevalent in the onset of puberty when the body starts to produce hormones, it has also been known to be a problem for women during pregnancy. Since acne is a problem for people world wide, there are many forms of acne treatments, acne products and acne medications on the market.
A natural treatment for acne is diet, which some say can be an acne cure and for many is the best acne treatment. When I was a teenager I had severe acne and tried using what were considered the best acne treatments at the time.
Retin-A was one of the most popular prescription acne medications on the market at that time. Noxzema skin cream and Clearsil were two of the most popular acne products used among my friends and I. I learned the hard way that Alcohol should not be used as a home remedy for acne and with severe acne cutting back on processed foods replacing them with a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables. I thought that diet as a natural acne treatment was going to be bad because until that point I lived junk food.
Using diet as a natural acne treatment was not as bad as I had thought it would be. There are so many foods that act naturally as a home remedy for acne and are often the best acne treatments. At first I thought that it would be easier to just remember when to use acne medication or the other acne products that I was using at the time rather than to give up on junk foods.
The internal home remedy for acne prescribed by my doctor and mother turned out to be for me the best acne treatment used along with all natural acne products like tea-tree oil. To my surprise I enjoyed this change in diet and in a short time I felt like it was an acne cure that was noticeable with in the week.
