There are several acne scar home remedies that you will find discussed online, but are they just old wives’ tales or do they really work?

Many people these days are looking for home remedies. If the worst of your acne is behind you, but you have been left with bad or even minor scarring, you probably want to get rid of those acne scars.

The mainstream dermatology solutions can be very harsh. Chemical peels remove a layer of your skin. If well done and if your skin is not too sensitive, a chemical peel can give lasting benefits. But for some people, something goes wrong and they are left with worse scarring than before.

Laser resurfacing uses light to remove or blur the signs of acne scars so that they are less noticeable. This can be a successful way to minimize scarring but it is expensive.

When it comes to home remedies, these are more effective on relatively light scarring. Natural remedies rely on the body’s own healing process to heal the scars. The actual remedies that we use are therefore intended to help the body to get back to its normal condition in which it can heal itself.

This is a gentler and often slower way of removing scars but it can be more effective in the long term. It involves considering how you will look and feel in 20 or 30 years time, not only right now.

Many natural remedies for acne scars rely on food products. The nutrients that they contain can nourish the skin and help it to regain its natural beauty. In this respect you can either take the nutrients internally or externally, or both.

Taking a long hard look at your diet is one of the best things that you can do for your skin. Cut out refined sugar. Do not cook with oil or eat fried foods, because cooked oils contain free radicals that will suck up all the good antioxidants you are taking in, and stop them getting to your skin.

Add into your diet all foods that are high in antioxidants. These include raw vegetables, salad and fresh fruits. Try eating ‘all raw’ for breakfast and lunch – for example, a big fruit smoothie for breakfast, fresh fruit for snacks, and a big salad with nuts and avocado for lunch. Do this for 6 months and you should see an improvement in your skin.

You can also use face packs made with sliced or blended vegetables that are high in antioxidants. Tomatoes and cucumber are a good combination. Cucumber is well known as a skin remedy as it tightens and tones the pores. Tomatoes have a very high antioxidant component. However, do not use tomato on your skin if you are allergic to it.

Fresh aloe vera juice can be a very effective way to treat acne scars. Aloe vera is a succulent plant that you can keep in a pot indoors. You will need a leaf about 2 inches wide. Remove it from the plant and peel it. Put the flesh in a blender and puree it. Then apply it as a face pack twice a day for at least 5 minutes each time. The puree will keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, but take it out an hour before using it to let it revive to room temperature. This is great for scars and also for healing and preventing pimples.

Tea tree oil is an antibacterial that can help prevent scarring and clean the skin to give it the best chance of healing scars that are already present. Use this in addition to other acne scar home remedies.

Acne is the medical term for common acne. Acne is widespread among teenagers, although a smaller percentage of adults in their 30′s and 40′s still get acne. Common acne is characterized by the presence of one or all of the following: whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustule or pimples that are seen on the face, chest, back, shoulders, even neck.

Thousands of oil glands can be found in the skin. The oil glands produce sebum, needed to help the skin stay moisturized and effective in its duty as the body’s protective barrier. The face, especially the nose, the mid -cheeks and the forehead have the highest density of oil glands. The back and mid-chest are the parts of the body where the largest oil glands are located. This explains why acne is mostly found in the greatest concentrations on the face, chest and back

Acne begins with clogged skin pores. The early, not-so-noticeable lesions are called comedones Comedones are either open like blackheads or closed like whiteheads. An open comedo is called a blackhead because of the blackish appearance of the skin pore clog. Likewise, a closed comedo is called whitehead because its pore plug is white or skin colored. In terms of openings, blackheads have distended opening around the follicle while a whitehead has a very narrow one, close to the hair follicle. While it’s very tempting, never squeeze your whiteheads or blackheads.

To understand acne better, here are the definitions and explanations of some important terms.

Acne is also often referred to as acne lesions. Lesions are physical changes on the body tissue brought about by a disease or condition.

A papule is a tiny lesion, not more than 5 millimeters in width, that is slightly raised above the skin’s surface. To help you visualize how tiny papules are, they are not easily visible and feel like sandpaper. Pustules, on the other hand, are dome-shaped and contain pus. Pus is typically made up of white blood and dead skin cells plus bacteria.

Nodules are another form of acne. A nodule is dome-or irregularly shaped lesion. Unlike the earlier types of acne, inflammation is already evident in nodules. The inflammation in nodules reaches the deeper layers of the skin and may have already destroyed some tissues. This type of acne may leave some scarring.

Causes of Acne

Before puberty, the sebaceous glands were primarily dormant. During puberty, androgens (male hormones) stir the sebaceous glands into action to produce sebum, the natural body oil. Sebum is supposed to rise and flow to the skin surface. Acne occurs if excessive sebum is produced by the sebaceous glands. The excessive output of sebum results in clogged skin pores which in turn attract dirt, bacteria and foreign debris, and forms the basis of acne. Teenage Acne is almost invariably caused by the increase in hormones during puberty which stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce excess oil.

In each case of acne, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact cause; it is usually a combination of various factors that results in acne for most people. Aside from the excessive production of sebum and age (teenagers are more likely to have acne) the following are risk factors that aid in the occurrence of acne:

Cosmetics, especially the oil-based ones, can plug additional skin pores.

Emotional stress has been known to cause acne.

Personal habits like pricking pimples , over cleansing and the use of Harsh soaps can make acne worse.

Disease and hormonal changes cause acne flare ups, for example pregnancies, or the period preceding menstruation.

Gender and genetic differences is the reason why more boys than girls have acne, since the hormone Testosterone is converted to DHT, which stimulates excess oil product.

Environmental conditions like pollution, temperature, etc, are risk Factors.

Drugs like antibiotics, steroids or oral contraceptives have been known to Trigger the occurrence of acne.

Diet is not medically identified as a cause of acne

Preventing acne

Cleanliness can help reduce bacteria and foreign debris at the site of the pore, but cleanliness alone is not a factor. The following steps would help prevent acne, or at least reduce the severity of outbreaks.

Water therapy

Drinking a minimum of 2 liters daily would keep you hydrated enough to reduce clogged up skin pores. This amount of water daily would enable you to shed more dead cells

Healthy diet

Eating more fruits and vegetables keeps your whole body healthy, especially the skin. With a low-fat diet, there is less oil to clog the skin pores. Make sure you have of the foods identified as antioxidants like vitamins A, C and E as well as those rich in minerals, like zinc.

Choose the Right beauty products

Some beauty products have been proven to aggravate the skin, helping acne form. Some acne sufferers use cosmetics to cover up some blemishes without realizing that the present acne may still get worse because of the additional pores plugged by the cosmetics applied on the skin. You may try natural – instead of chemical-based products such as facial washes with tea tree oil, however about 4% of the population has a skin reaction to tea tree oil, so always test this natural medication on a small area of skin first.

Develop Good Habits

Develop habits that would not add to more plugged pores on the face and anywhere else. For examples, do not leave make up products on your skin when you sleep. Keep your hair away from face because hair contains oil. Never prick your pimples. Pimples on the road to being healed without scars will just become more infected.

At the same time, keep in mind that over-cleansing your skin may irritate it and consequently make the acne worse than it currently is.

Can a Zinc Deficiency Cause Acne? There is nothing worse than owning a skin care store full of wonderful, natural products and getting a horrible bout of adult acne. I now sympathize with thousands of people that have to deal with this terrible skin affliction. Thank goodness, after some trials and tribulations, I was able to identify the culprit and, as they say, heal thyself.

In short, here were the wrong answers to my acne problem:

“Your skin is reacting to all the different products you keep trying.”

“Maybe you need to go back to using skin care with chemicals.”

“Have you tried ProActive? It worked for someone I know.”

“It’s probably perimenopausal hormones.”

“Try using facial oil on your skin to help balance your own oil production.”

“Try washing your face more, or maybe wash your face less.”

When your face is erupting more than Old Faithful, most of us will try anything and everything to get it under control. The idea that going chemical-free made my face break out is ridiculous. Out of desperation, I tried ProActive at one point. It does dry up blemishes but it also oxidizes your skin, adding to wrinkles and does nothing to keep new blemishes from forming under the skin (those enormous zits I like to call “undergrounders”). The worst idea of all was that the zits were the result of hormones gone crazy, which leaves you feeling helpless. Furthermore nothing, nothing, I put on or left off my face made any difference.

Finding a Magic Acne Cure

Zinc Deficiency Cause Acne

It was this realization that led me to my personal cure. I knew it had to be something I was putting in my body or in my case not putting in. I researched extensively and saw some people were having success taking mega-doses of B vitamins, while others showed no improvement or worried about the long term effects. It didn’t seem “natural” to overdose on supplements in order to make my skin healthy again. But why had it suddenly turned unhealthy?

I looked at my eating habits of late. I was prone to the occasional chocolate craving, but after all these years I doubted that the sweet confection had turned against me. Besides, I was buying organic, dark chocolate now; nothing sinister there. In fact, I had improved my diet greatly over the years and recently tried to go vegan.

Can a Zinc Deficiency Cause Acne?

Hum? Then I ran across an article by my favorite health advocate, Mike Adams of NaturalNews. He mentions in the article how a Zinc Deficiency Cause Acne Maybe my feeble attempt at a new vegan lifestyle was leaving me a bit short in the zinc department? After reading up on the signs of zinc deficiency, I decided to pump up my intake of oysters and pumpkin seeds to see if it would help. Results? Enough of a difference in my skin to look deeper into zinc.

There are subtle signs making a Zinc Deficiency Cause Acne. Acne can be just one of them. Other signs can be white spots on the fingernails, dry, brittle hair, slow wound healing and a decreased sense of taste and smell. I had all of these. Zinc plays an important role in our overall immune function and is important for our general health. In addition to adding zinc-rich foods to my diet, I’ve also added purifying green tea (both the drink and a green tea mask), vitamin A rich carrot juice (mixed with orange to make it taste better), lots of delicious berries, foods rich in omega-3 and other great-for-the-skin goodies. A simple, all-natural cleanser and oil-free moisturizer, both with tea tree oil, help keep blemishes at bay.

Acne Gone Now

I’m now happy to report my face is smooth and clear once again! Now, I realize that my situation may not be the the same for other acne sufferers, but the story seems worth telling for the purpose of looking at our diet first in solving health issues of any kind. The next time your body starts to change in a way that is displeasing, steer clear of the quick chemical fixes and look to nature to solve all ill wills!

Since the skin is the largest organ on the body and it assists other major organs in the human body with eliminating waste, one of the best acne treatments is diet which has many home remedies for acne in the foods that we eat. If you are unhealthy inside it will be reflected in your skin.

Acne occurs when the natural oils that the skin produces clogs the pores of the skin. Normally acne is prevalent in the onset of puberty when the body starts to produce hormones, it has also been known to be a problem for women during pregnancy. Since acne is a problem for people world wide, there are many forms of acne treatments, acne products and acne medications on the market.

A natural treatment for acne is diet, which some say can be an acne cure and for many is the best acne treatment. When I was a teenager I had severe acne and tried using what were considered the best acne treatments at the time.

Retin-A was one of the most popular prescription acne medications on the market at that time. Noxzema skin cream and Clearsil were two of the most popular acne products used among my friends and I. I learned the hard way that Alcohol should not be used as a home remedy for acne and with severe acne cutting back on processed foods replacing them with a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables. I thought that diet as a natural acne treatment was going to be bad because until that point I lived junk food.

Using diet as a natural acne treatment was not as bad as I had thought it would be. There are so many foods that act naturally as a home remedy for acne and are often the best acne treatments. At first I thought that it would be easier to just remember when to use acne medication or the other acne products that I was using at the time rather than to give up on junk foods.

The internal home remedy for acne prescribed by my doctor and mother turned out to be for me the best acne treatment used along with all natural acne products like tea-tree oil. To my surprise I enjoyed this change in diet and in a short time I felt like it was an acne cure that was noticeable with in the week.

My mother was happier that I was eating something besides chips and was also happy with what we thought was an acne cure. She was also happy that she did not have to spend a lot of money on acne medications or worry about which over the counter acne products were the best. Who would have thought when I drank naturally sweetened juices and lots of water that it would be a natural acne treatment. My breakouts were far and few in between all because of using diet as an acne treatment turned out to pretty much be an acne cure for me.

There are so many acne treatments on the market today that profess to be the answer to all of your problems but the truth of the matter is you will have to find the best acne products or try to find the best home remedies for you by simply researching on your own.

Some people will require acne medications because more serious illness are the reason for their acne problem. Home remedies for acne through diet can alleviate many of your outbreaks because we truly are what we eat. If the eyes are the window to the soul then the skin is a reflection of your overall health so the beginning of a real cure starts from within.

It is a form of acne vulgaris, or common acne. All acne comedoniano pimples are caused by a blockage of the hair follicles in the skin.

It may seem weird to have follicles in a place like the side of the nose where there do not seem to be any hairs. In fact there are microscopic hairs all over the skin everywhere on the body. Some people have more or less depending on their genetic inheritance, but we all have hairs that we cannot see. These hairs have follicles (the depression in the skin in which they grow) and these follicles can suffer from excess sebum causing blockage.

Acne Comedoniano and Sebum

Sebum is the natural oil that keeps our skin smooth and moisturized. Production of sebum is affected by our hormones and most people produce more around the time of puberty and into young adulthood. Some people’s skin produces so much sebum that it collects in the follicles, causing blackheads.

An open comedo (plural: comedones) is a blackhead. These form where the follicle remains open to the air. The sebum mixes with keratin, forming a semi-solid substance that blocks the follicle. On the surface where it has contact with the air, it oxidizes to a dark brown color. They are not really black.

Closed comedones are similar but a thin layer of skin forms over the comedo so the sebum does not have contact with the air and remains a yellowish color, forming a small bump. These are called whiteheads. They sometimes become infected, forming pus. Infected whiteheads usually grow larger over a couple of days.

Since comedones are formed by over production of sebum, it is important not to use harsh acne treatments on them. Products that dry out the skin will make the body think it is not producing enough sebum, so it goes ahead and makes more, making the problem worse. Even washing many times a day with soap can have this effect.

Given time, the body will use its own natural healing resources to deal with Acne Comedoniano. Blackheads will be expelled from the follicle and whiteheads will dry up. However, the pimples and blackheads are usually unattractive, so many people prefer to look for an acne comediano natural treatment to get rid of them faster.

Blackhead Natural Treatment

Acne Comedoniano Blackheads can be removed with a pore cleansing strip. This is an adhesive strip that you stick over the worst affected areas, e.g. the nose, and leave for 10 minutes. When you peel it off according to the directions, it will automatically extract many of the blackheads which stick to the strip.

Whiteheads can be treated with a natural antiseptic such as creams based on tea tree oil or aloe vera juice. This can help to reduce and prevent infection and the formation of pus.

Food and Blackhead Prevention

However, prevention is always the best method for natural treatments for Acne Comedoniano. One of the best ways to prevent acne is to take a close look at your diet. It is often effective to cut out milk products including cheese, cream and all of the milk based substances like whey, milk powder, lactose, milk solids etc that are found in many processed foods. This is because most dairy cows are fed huge quantities of sex hormones to keep them producing milk even when they do not have a calf. These hormones will only add to the already high levels of hormones that are circulating in the body of an adolescent or young adult.

At the same time, reduce sugar intake to as close to zero as you can, and increase your consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. This will give the body more of the vitamins and minerals that it needs to fight all kinds of infection, disease and irregularities, including acne comedoniano or blackheads.

Eighty-five percent of the teenage population battles acne in some form and in most cases, there will be significant improvement of the outbreak when treated with a combination of medication including antibiotics.

However, dermatologists are now warning that a new strain of acne is resistant to antibiotics.

CBS News medical correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton sat down with Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith to talk more about this disturbing trend.

According to Ashton, super acne has probably been around for a while, but more dermatologists are starting to see more and more of it now — “because just like with a lot of forms of resistant bacteria, it’s becoming more refractory or difficult to treat.”

Super acne, which is a bacteria, can be classified as a “bug.”

“We call this a discussion about bugs and drugs,” Dr. Ashton explained. “This is a bacterium known as P. Acnes, and it’s part of the skin flora. So what’s difficult about it is that a bacteria that we normally see with acne are normally very susceptible to antibiotics.”

Unfortunately, unlike other forms of acne, super acne is not very treatable and “about 50 percent of bacteria that cause acne can be resistant,” Ashton explained.

A patient might not find out right away if he or she has the resistant bacteria.

“That’s the important thing is that, you know, acne can be difficult to treat for a lot of cases,” she explained. “But once a dermatologist starts to put you on antibiotics, within weeks to months, your skin should really clear up. So when it doesn’t, that’s when you would start suspecting it.”

“So what alternative are you left with if you’ve got the ‘super bug?’” Smith asked.

“Well, that’s the key thing here. The way that antibiotics normally work is they reduce inflammation and cut down obviously on the bacteria, the super growth that forms within this skin unit. When that doesn’t work, then you have to move to things like retinoids or Accutane, [which]is the brand name,” she said. “Alternative treatments like tea tree oil and things like benzoyl peroxide cut down on oil and unclog the pores.”

With the over-use of antibiotics today, their effectiveness is no longer what they used to be.

“Well, yes. And we have to put it into historical context. In the past we used antibiotics because it saved people’s lives. Now they’re used because they’re quick, they’re cheap, they’re effective,” Ashton said. “And what’s really sad here, Harry, is that for people suffering with acne it’s emotionally and physically scarring.”

Extracted from the leaves of a plant native to Australia, the pure form of the oil is very strong and usually diluted for use in cosmetics and medicines. Historically, tea tree oil got its name because the leaves of the melaleuca alternifolia plant were first steeped as a tea. Traditionally, the leaves were used topically for treating burns, lacerations, and infections.

Uses for Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has been effective in helping or healing many maladies from athlete’s foot and acne to dandruff, nail fungus, eczema, ringworm, and even annoyances like lice and mosquito bites. This antiseptic, antiviral, and antifungal oil is wonderful for stopping pain and irritation while providing a soothing disinfectant for your skin. For acne sufferers, tea tree oil has been proven great for killing the bacteria and flushing out the toxins while keeping the skin’s natural oils without over-drying. For helping coughs and colds, tea tree oil helps to break up mucus.

As an essential oil used in aromatherapy, tea tree oil is found in many face and body creams, soaps, lotions, hair products and candles. Even though tea tree oil is a natural product, there have been studies done to prove its effectiveness as a treatment for certain ailments.

A controlled trial investigated three groups with athlete’s foot. Out of 158 sufferers, one group used 25 percent tea tree oil solution, the second group worked with 50 percent, and the final group was the placebo. Used twice daily for four weeks, the 50 percent solution group showed 64 percent cured in relation to only 31 percent in the placebo group. Another trial used tea tree oil to fight acne and it was tested against benzoyl peroxide and had fewer skin side effects overall but both groups showed significantly less skin irritations, inflammation, and breakouts.

Scientific Studies for Tea Tree Oil and Acne

Natural health products have been more popular in recent years and because they are branching out of their niche environment, more scientific studies are being conducted in order to test these natural products on conditions and diseases we have yet to find cures for. Tea tree oil has not been forgotten and emerging information is making headlines due to a rising health outbreak in the United States.

MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, has been in the news recently due to outbreaks of the infection caused by mistakes and sloppy corners used in hospitals across the country. MRSA cannot be treated with normal antibiotics and the virus is easily transferred through large environments of sick people (from hospitals to nursing homes) causing pneumonia and other serious infections. A Northern Ireland study conducted by Queen’s University Belfast, shows that tea tree oil may provide a simple approach to preventing the virus from spreading.

Cure Acne with Tea Tree Oil

In the news published earlier this month, lead author of the study Dr. Bronagh Blackwood from the university and his colleagues are testing results of patients using a body wash with 5 percent concentration of tea tree oil to combat MRSA. Earlier studies have shown that tea tree oil-infused body wash has seemed to eliminate the virus from the skin because a lot of these infections start at the surgical site. Blackwood’s team is experimenting with newly-diagnosed MRSA patients on people in hospital’s intensive care units and even though they are only a year into the trial they are hopeful for a positive outcome, “We started this trial in November 2007,” Blackwood continued, “We aim to complete it in November 2010.”

Tea tree oil should be used with caution and under supervision from a natural healer or healthcare provider in order to be used properly and in its correct form. It should be noted that tea tree oil should be checked for potency before use, because in its undiluted and purest state, it can cause skin irritations like blistering, itching, and rashes. Also tea tree oil is supposed to be used topically only and never to be ingested, ask a professional before using if pregnant or breast-feeding.
